Internet Girl or Internet AI Slop?

No let’s be serious, KATSEYE has garnered critical acclaim and a global fanbase since forming on the Netflix reality series Pop Star Academy in 2024. Pressing play on their extremely eclectic, electropop bop, I was gagged to hear a reheating of “Gnarly’s” nachos if chatgpt was prompted to make a sequel to the viral track. The gay in me wants to turn my brain off and dance when I hear Manon start the song off with a solid vocal, “Haven you heard? / I’m the internet girl.” I can envision the flawless choreography the ladies hit when they teased the single live but the brash, undeniable catchiness of “Gnarly” or the more straightforward confident delivery that can be found on the latin pop “Gabriela” shakes me back to reality and makes me question what’s the goal for a single like “Internet Girl”?

Does HYBE want to keep our attention deficit brains locked in before KATSEYE head to the Grammys in February? Will an immaculate music video win critics over similar to “Gnarly” when it took the internet by storm? I’m sure I’ll hear this song in the next couple of weeks when I catch a drag show or the baby on the pre-chorus goes viral on tiktok but I was definitely expecting more from this latest single.

Knowing Justin Tranter’s (Good Luck, Babe! - Chappell Roan, Bad Liar - Selena Gomez) pen blessed this track makes me optimistic that there’s another layer to this single that I haven’t grasped yet. I love pop music that can range from addictive fast food to an elevated five course meal meant to be consumed slowly so I’ll stay tuned for what the Internet Girls plan to do next to break the internet.
