KAYTRANADA Drops Two New Era Singles “Lover/Friend” + “Stuntin”

December 04, 2023 by Marcel J in New Music, Feature

“Stuntin” is a sauntering, runway vibe that should be spinning at Public Record, Cafe Erzulie or wherever aesthetically pleasing bar you sip your espresso martinis at

KAYTRANADA has been blessing us with undeniable vibes all year from the sun soaked collaborative project KAYTRAMINÉ with Aminé, producing AMAKA’s transformative, afro-futuristic debut EP OASIS and offering up some hard hitting house beats for some of my favorite women in music whose careers are thriving shoutout Mariah The Scientist, Victoria Monet, and Maeta. Before the year ends the Montreal musical genius is leaving us with some new music to hold us over as we wait for his highly anticipated third album.

While the details of KAYTRANADA’s third album are still under wraps (other than it being finito), the two latest singles “Lover/Friend” and “Stuntin” give us a little taste of what’s to come.  “Lover/Friend” features Rochelle Jordan a soulful songstress whose voice compliments KAYTRANADA’s signature sound incorporating early 2000s R&B, funk and house music. Over a slinky, downtempo beat, Rochelle leaves us with a chorus that’ll be stuck in your head after a couple plays, “Hеard you wanna be my lover / Wanna be morе than friends / Heard you wanna be my lover / And you can't pretend.” “Lover/Friend” doesn’t stray far from the low key, genre bending nostalgia of KAYTRANADA’s second studio album BUBBA that dropped in 2019.

“Stuntin” is a sauntering, runway vibe that should be spinning at Public Record, Cafe Erzulie or wherever aesthetically pleasing bar you sip your espresso martinis at. Channel Tres voice is always intoxicating and this record is no different. He adds the perfect touch to the bouncy cut. Both “Stuntin” and “Lover/Friend” have me missing the summer nights and sexy moments that these songs like exude. Let’s pray KAYTRANADA is cooking up another album of the summer.

Rebecca Black's New Single "Crumbs" Is A Glorious Redemption

January 18, 2023 by Marcel J in New Music, Feature

Rebecca Black is currently eating all your faves up and you probably have no idea. “Crumbs” is the latest single from Black’s forthcoming debut album Let Her Burn and it’s a liberating affair that belongs on the sweatiest of dance floors and the top of every pop playlist with taste. Hearing “Crumbs” feels like musical escapism as the brilliant production glitches, throbs and matches the sexy energy burgeoning from Ms. Black. This song would fit nicely between a Britney Blackout cut and a Janet Damita Jo dance number, Rebeccca’s pop influences alongside her chaotic blend of electronic, dance, hyperpop sounds like heaven.

“Crumbs” is the first of three singles leading up to the album and offers up a dark contrast to the dreamy “Look At You” and most recent indie vibe “Sick To My Stomach”. Rebecca’s production choices are versatile and showcase her refreshing songwriting. Black has utilized her viral fame to support her growing artistry and it’ll be dope to see if the mainstream can accept an artist that’s working hard to carve out a lane for herself and deliver a meaningful body of work. Fans of Charli XCX, Muna, Poppy and Slayyyter should add “Crumbs” to their rotation (if they haven’t already joined the Rebecca Black wave).

Raye's "Escapism" Is A Triumphant Joyride

December 06, 2022 by Marcel J in New Music

Raye’s unwavering rise on the charts with her triumphant single “Escapism” off her forthcoming debut album My 21st Century Blues is a satisfying feat to witness. It’s taken 10 years and maneuvering through a lot of music industry politics for the U.K. songstress to be able to release a body of work and she’s showcasing her soul on this record and every track she’s dropped so far from this project. “Escapism” is a siren call that has Raye confessing her feelings after a night of overindulgence and broken hearts over a relentless 808.

A little context if you care to listen
I find myself in a shit position
The man that I love sat me down last night
And he told me that it's over, dumb decision

I can easily visualize the narrative being told on “Escapism” in my mind as I keep the potent track on repeat. Raye’s pen has garnered numerous hits but it hits so much better when her stirring vocals are in the front seat. As I’m writing this Raye is less than 400 units away from her first UK #1 as an independent artist. Well deserved and there are a lot more W’s on the horizon.

Shygirl's New Single 'Nike' Needs To Be On Your Rotation

September 01, 2022 by Marcel J in New Music, Feature

Shygirl is preparing to bless the girls with her long awaited debut album ‘Nymph’ and we just got a taste of the new era with “Nike”, a subtle bop that has Shygirl talking her shit and simply telling you to do it like Nike. The production reminds me of Q-Tip’s 90s hit “Breathe And Stop” and a nice change of pace from Shygirl’s usual underground sound. “Nike” is the fourth single from ‘Nymph’ and has me ready to experience the full journey we’re about to embark on when the project drops on September 30th.

With a list of heavy hitters on the production side (Sega Bodega, BloodPop, Mura Masa and Goldstein to name a few) expect an experimental range of sounds from electronic dance, club pop, grime to industrial. Artists like Shygirl can really help listeners get introduced to dope talent that thrives outside of the Hot 100 charts. While we’re here check out a couple of my faves from the South London baddie and stream the fuck out of “Nike” immediately after.
